Warning, copious use of the word awesome ahead. xD

The Day I Met Cobra Starship! (diary written two days after, on 10/24/09)

On Thursday, October the 22nd, Victoria’s Secret PINK was holding an event. To play a concert there were the local band Dot Dot Dot, a DJ group called Girl Talk, and the awesomest party band ever, Cobra Starship. I was ecstatic to be able to see Cobras for the second time, especially because the event was free. I invited my best friends Israel, Jessica, and Zoe, to come along.

I anticipated the concert for two days after I heard about it, and then it came. That day at school, I worked on a large newsprint drawing of the whole band in chibi form. I pretty much only worked on the drawing all day long, as it was a hugely slow school day. I did my work quickly, because of my excitement, and the day passed at a normal pace during classes. Jessica got on my bus with me, and we went back home.

When Jessica and I hung out, we watched a hilariously cheesy Disney Channel movie called “Mom’s Got A Date With A Vampire.” I played Cobra songs on guitar. Zoe called, and told me she was indeed able to go. Directly after, Israel called and described in excruciating detail how he was going to wear two hats. I joked how we were technically a Mighty Boosh cosplay, as I was a neon-outfitted Electro Girl and he was Johnny Two Hats. Soon thereafter, they both arrived. When Israel arrived, the first thing he did was head for the fridge. xD He then wrote a message to my brother on the fridge: “To Sam: how many knives can you withstand?” When he met my brother, he remarked “oh, he’s not as cool as I had hoped.” (He pretty much expected my brother to be Poochy from The Simpsons. xDD)

Then, Israel and Sam played with Bakugans as me, Jessica, and Zoe played with my figures. Soon after, my dad came, and we left to the concert after first stopping for shakes at Arby’s. (Israel disposed of his in a recycling bin, hilariously enough.)

I had realized I had completely forgotten earplugs! So, my dad stopped at his office and got me some. Then, we continued on to the concert. We gave our tickets, got our spots, and enjoyed the DJ Action Jackson’s cool remixes. Seth (a senior friend of ours who graduated last year) stopped over to talk to us, which was pretty cool. We enjoyed Dot Dot Dot’s set, other than the Lady Gaga cover they did. >_> Ryland was walking around onstage in the very back after they finished, so we all yelled “HIII RYLAND!!!”

Soon enough, Cobra came out! And it was awesome! Gabe remarked about how exciting it was to play the event, and then they started with “The City Is At War” (as they usually do.) [I can’t remember the setlist entirely, but I believe it was TCIAW, Nice Guys Finish Last, Kiss My Sass, Smile For The Paparazzi, Good Girls Go Bad, Hot Mess, Wet Hot American Summer, MMAW (WH, TI), and Guilty Pleasure.]

The concert was amazing. Jessica had to leave our group with my dad because she needed to get away from the people next to us smoking clove cigarettes, but other than that it was AMAZING. They made awesome jokes, deep remarks about their past, as well as some shenanigan moments (Gabe pulled his shirt up during “Kiss My Sass when he sings “I ain’t gonna lie, I can be a nasty guy”;). So the whole concert was so much fun!

Afterwards, we waited for them to play “Snakes On A Plane” as an encore, but they didn’t. So, using Israel as a human snowplow, we followed the direction they walked offstage, and found the outdoor backstage tents. We hung around them to see if we could meet them. Eventually, Ryland walked out and started talking to some people. It looked like he was leaving, so I shouted out to him: “RYLAND! I LOVE YOUR SPONGEBOB PANTS, THEY’RE AMAZING!!” and he got all excited and yelled back “WOAH, YOU LIKE SPONGEBOB?” and I was all, “YEAH! I LOVE SPONGEBOB!” We both yelled “YEAH! SPONGEBOB! WOO!” and then he came over and took a picture with me and Jessica. My hands were shaking so bad. xD

Then, Suarez came out of the tent, and we waited to meet him. I told him how much I loved him in the “Bronappetit!” episode of Cobra Cam. “It was one of the funniest things I’d ever seen in my life,” I remarked. He replied “Yeah, it was so much fun to do! I want to do another one for the second season.” I replied “You should, it’d be so awesome!” He held his hand up for a high five while I talked about Cobra Cam, and when I high fived him he held my hand. O________O It was fucking awesome. Then he also took a picture with me, and I know it sounds totally creepy, but he smelled really good. xDD;; I usually hate cologne, so it surprised me.

After that, we waited a while, and then- DUN DUN DAAAA DUNNN! It was Gabe Saporta, in the flesh! I waited in a large group to meet him. While we waited, Jessica saw Vicky-T and said to me, “Oh, it’s Vicky over there!” There were these two elitist biznitches in front of her and one of them scoffed “IT’S VICKY-T.” Pretty much right after that, I said “ahaha, maybe I should yell at them in Spanish and it’d catch their attention.” Zoe asked why, as she’s not familiar with the band’s Hispanic blood. I answered “Oh, Gabe’s from Uruguay. He speaks Spanish.” and one of the biznitches ~sarcastically yelled at her friend: “OMG, DID YOU KNOW GABE SPEAKS SPANISH! COS HE DOES.” and I yelled back: “OH MY DEAR GOD! IF I DIDN’T KNOW THAT, I WOULD HAVE KILLED MY SELF! THANK YOU!” And they left us alone after that, mostly because we went away from them to go get close to Gabe.

I stood next to him while the other girls who had waited to talk to him did. He talked with a girl who Jessica and I’d met at Believers Never die in May, about her piano cover of a song. He said “yeah, it was awesome. You fucked up once in it though. Still awesome!” xD Eventually, we got to talk to him. My picture with him didn’t save, but it’s ok because of the conversation we held! I said something along the lines of “I really love you. You are just so talented, and funny. I really respect your philosophy, and I think you’re just totally insane. I read your tl;dr blog all the time, and I adore it.” He smiled SO BIG when I mentioned the blog-- I think it’s because barely anyone reads it. But I’ll never forget how he listened and smiled so big. It made me feel so happy.

When I was done saying that, he pulled me up to him and whispered “You should tell my girlfriend this. ‘Cos she thinks I’m a piece of shit!” I replied “Really?! I love you!” I almost said “well, you know, if you weren’t 30... I could, y’know, be your girlfriend.” But I didn’t. xDD I talked to him for a little bit more. Israel and Gabe had on almost matching jackets (and what was so cool, Gabe’s jacket arm had “GS” printed on it). Gabe said “Oh, nice, jacket! What is that, flannel?” and kind of inspected his jacket. xD It was so awesome. Then, I realized I had my copy of Hot Mess with me, and Gabe said “Open it up, so I can sign the inside.” Well, I never have the CDs I love in their right cases, and I told him that when All Time Low’s Nothing Personal was in the case. It made him crack up, and he signed the picture of himself in the booklet with “g.a.b.e.“ in all lowercase with two hearts that intertwine with the letters underneath. Then, I asked him to sign Israel’s hat (a top hat with a rainbow band and a felt flower on the top). He made this awesome thinking-face when he was deciding how to sign it, and that I’ll never forget. It was so hilarious. He signed the hat in the Hot Mess font “GABE -COBRAS-”. I then told him about the picture I had drawn, but I totally forgot it at home! He asked my name, and he said he’d try to remember it. (I so hope he doessss. D: ) I then said thank you for his time, and let the other people who were waiting talk to him. (Oh, and, even though the picture didn’t save, it was hilarious when I said “get in get in get in!” to my friends and then Gabe went “GETINGETINGETINGETINGETIN!” until the picture took. xD) Also, Gabe did the same holding-hands thing that Suarez did, but for way longer. He also hugged me three times and high-fived me a bunch. <3333 Dad remarked before we left Gabe that “I’m just the dad here, but I really enjoyed your show. Thank you.” so that was weird, because it was obviously racy. xD It’s a Cobra concert, of course there’ll be ~shenanigans.

So after a while, we got to see Victoria. I yelled for her, and she came over to us. I said how much I loved her video editing and her animations she has on YouTube, which made her also smile really big. I guess artists just really love when you remark on things other than their music. I told her I look up to her and her talent. She then hugged me, which was really nice! I asked her if she took my recommendation to watch The Mighty Boosh, but she already knew about it because she’s half-British, which I totally forgot. xD Then we pretty much fangirled about Noel Fielding, which was so damn awesome to do with VICTORIA ASHER and not just Israel as I usually do. (No offense, Icchan, we’ll always be VINCE FANGIRLTRON.) So we all got a picture with her. Israel said how much he loves her keytar, and I told her about how he’s my keyboardist in our band. 8D So that was awesome.

Soooo, then we waited almost forever for Nate, because he was onstage watching Girl Talk. He was on the stairs to the stage, so we yelled out for him, and he carefully walked through the mud (it was raining) in his flip flops. xD I asked, “Why are you wearing flip flops?” and he said “You wear rain boots, I wear flip flops! It’s what we do!” We got a picture, and then he left, so we didn’t get to talk to him much. It was still awesome, though.

I realized I forgot to tell Gabe my Twitter username, so he would remember it was my picture. The crowd around him was sparse, so we made our way over. I told him my sn, and he asked what my name was again. When I told him he said: “Thought so, I’ll really try to remember that. We just get so many tweets a day, but I’ll try.” I thanked him, told him about his shirt in my drawing-- it says “I <3 Red Bull and Vodka”. It made him crack up again, so that made me really happy. I said goodbye, and he hugged me again. 8D

We went home, and I played Cobra songs on guitar while Israel dubbed Everybody Hates Chris in a hilarious fashion, as well as doing a hardcore Aquafresh commercial. xDD Zoe said “Chloë, are there supposed to be green spots on that red blanket?” and I replied “no, but I see them too.” x3 Then, everyone’s parents came almost simultaneously, and I took a quick shower and went to sleep after Twittering about how fucking awesome my day was. <333

I’ll remember it forever, and even though some of the pictures are blurry, it doesn’t matter. It reminds me of one of Gabe’s tl;dr posts to say this philosophy I’ve always thought to be important--I have the memories, and those are better than the pictures.
